In 2003 I was recovering from cancer and it was six months before I was able to work again.

One weekend I went to my local Boot Sale and managed to purchase some Commando issues.

Going through them I came across #1769 ‘The Hunt is On’ January 1984.

The front cover art looked familiar.

I realised that I had seen this artist’s illustrations for 'The Deathless Men' serialised in ‘The Hornet’ around the mid 1960’s.

The artist in question was Frederick Alan Philpott

This started a two year quest to find all his Commando artwork.

Every time I acquired a Commando issue I was checking the covers.

It was later through a friend’s collection I found he also did interior art.

Commando #49 ‘Blood Valley’ was the earliest I found with his interior art.

#1361 ‘The Lost Battalion’ the interior art was carried out by Philpott and another of my favourite artists Gordon Checkley Livingstone,

Philpott did 24 front covers and 14 interior artworks.

I wanted to show that if you have a favourite artist these pages may help in your quest.

So following are the results of my research.
